1. Put jewellery on last

Apply makeup, perfume, hairspray and lotion first, let them dry, and then wear your jewellery. Chemicals in these products are the main reason plating fades.

2. Keep it away from water

Take off rings, bangles and earrings before washing hands, bathing, swimming or doing wudu. Water and soap slowly damage the polish and can loosen stones.

3. Wipe it after every use

Sweat and oil from the skin stay on the metal. Wipe each piece gently with a soft, dry cotton or microfibre cloth before putting it away.

4. Store each piece separately

Keep necklace sets, jhumka and earrings in separate pouches or a box with compartments. This stops stones from scratching each other and chains from tangling.

5. Keep it airtight and dry

8. Handle pearls and stone work gently

Pearl drops and tassels on jhumka are delicate. Hold the earring by the stud or hook, not by the hanging parts.

9. Remove jewellery before sleeping and exercise

Pulling on pillows or heavy movement can bend hooks and loosen settings.

10. Rotate your pieces

Wearing different sets in turn means no single piece takes all the wear.
